COVID-19 and Stress

September 2020

Stress or worry

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic can be stressful. Here are a few ways to help deal with pandemic stress.

Identify how to get help.

  • Know where and how to get support services, including counseling or therapy. If stress is getting in the way of your daily activities, contact your doctor or call the SAMHSA helpline at 1-800-985-5990.

Take a break from the news.

  • Repeatedly hearing about the pandemic while watching, reading, or listening to news stories can be upsetting. Try to find a balance between daily activities and checking the news for updates.

Take care of your body.

  • Eat healthy, well balanced meals.
  • Take deep breaths or stretch to relax your mind and body.
  • Focus on getting enough sleep.

Connect with others.

  • Share how you are feeling with a family member or friend. Use social media, texting, calling or mail to connect with others while maintaining social distancing.
